When The Beatles were recording and mixing their music in the 1960s they spent a lot more time on their mono mixes than they did on their stereo mixes. Why? Because at that time mono was the standard way that most people listened back to their music so it only made sense that they spent more of their time on those mixes.
Because of this, many Beatles purists consider these mono mixes to be the "real" versions of The Beatles albums as they were actually intended to be heard. And many have claimed that the mono mixes actually sound superior to the stereo mixes. John Lennon himself claimed that the mono mix of Sgt. Pepper was much better than the stereo mix of Sgt. Pepper.

More Differences Than Just The Panning
You may assume that the only difference between the stereo mixes and the mono mixes is the panning (obviously with mono there is no panning.) But there's actually quite a bit more to it than that.
In some cases the mono mix will actually be longer or shorter than the stereo mix. In some cases it will be slower or faster. In some cases it will have significantly different instrumentation levels (ie some instruments may be audible in one mix but not the other.) And in some cases there effects that are audible in one mix that are not audible in another.

The Mono Masters Compilation
An important part of this box set is the "Mono Masters" double disc set which includes the original mono mixes for every non-album song that the band originally mixed in mono (which they stopped bothering with in 1969 which is why Let It Be & Abbey Road are not included.)
Many of The Beatles greatest songs were never included on their albums including "I Want to Hold Your Hand," "She Loves You," "Hey Jude," "Day Tripper," "We Can Work It Out," "Paperback Writer," "Rain," and the fast version of "Revolution." All of these songs are included in their original mono mix as a part of this Mono Masters double disc set.
This set also includes the four Beatles songs that were included on the Yellow Submarine album that were not included on any other album ("It's All Too Much," "Hey Bulldog," "All Together Now," & "It's Only A Northern Song.")
